Early Childhood Development (ECD) Support Campaign
At Commoncents Foundation, we believe that the foundation of a strong, thriving society begins with its youngest members. That’s why we’ve launched the ECD Support Campaign—a critical initiative aimed at strengthening Early Childhood Development (ECD) centers in South Africa and surrounding regions.
Too many children in underserved communities lack access to the most basic elements of a quality early education. This campaign seeks to raise funds to support ECD centers by addressing the urgent needs that hinder children's physical, emotional, and cognitive development during their most formative years.

Why This Matters
Children from disadvantaged backgrounds are at a significantly higher risk of developmental delays due to poverty, malnutrition, and inadequate early education environments. By investing in ECD, we are giving these children the chance to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally—laying the groundwork for future success and leadership.
Early Childhood Development (ECD) is the cornerstone of a child’s lifelong learning, health, and emotional well-being. The early years are critical for cognitive, social, and emotional development. Children who receive quality early education are more likely to succeed in school, avoid social problems, and contribute positively to society later in life. In South Africa, however, access to ECD remains unequal and deeply insufficient, especially for children from disadvantaged communities.
According to the 2021 ECD Census, there are approximately 42,420 Early Learning Programmes (ELPs) across South Africa, serving over 1.66 million children. Despite this reach, an alarming 58% of children are still not enrolled in any form of pre-school or structured early learning. This means that the majority of young children, especially in rural and low-income areas, are missing out on the foundational support they need during the most critical developmental years.
The disparity in access to quality ECD is most stark among low-income households. Children from poorer families are far less likely to be enrolled in ECD programmes, and those who are enrolled often attend centres that lack trained educators, proper infrastructure, and basic learning materials. In fact, only about one in three ECD centres in the country receives the government ECD subsidy. The current subsidy is R17 per child per day, a rate that has not increased since 2019, making it extremely difficult for many centres to maintain minimum operational standards.
Health and nutrition also pose serious challenges for South Africa’s youngest children. According to UNICEF, around 23% of children live in severe child food poverty, meaning they do not have access to the diverse and nutritious food necessary for proper growth and brain development. This directly affects their readiness for school and long-term health outcomes.
Furthermore, the “Thrive by Five Index” (2021) revealed that only 46% of four-year-olds enrolled in early learning programmes are developmentally on track for their age. Many of these children are experiencing stunting either physically or cognitively, and are not reaching their full potential due to poor early development environments.
